Huler is the first specialized ship for trading. It only has one small hard point so avoid engaging in combat at all cost.
Maximum cargo is 22 tonnes (without shields) so it's considerable upgrade from sidewinder if we are talking about trading, doing basic missions or even exploration.
Maximum jump range is around 31LY (compared to Sidewinders 24) and it makes hauler a good choice for starting explorer. Still if you want to explore in style you need to earn more money and go for Cobra or Asp Explorer because of their jump range or even Clipper (which is one of the most stylish ship in the game to date) but hauler is a simple and great ship for beginners.
Hauler has 2nd worst shields in the game - considerable better than sidewinder and slightly worse than Eagle, but you will need them only when you run away and it's not that hard if you are always aware about your surroundings.
Also hauler is most used as taxi ship because of it's price and jump range, you can easily get 28LY and that's enough for getting from point A to point B. Taxi ships are ships that players use to get to their stored ships as currently there are no way to move your ship or CMDR to specific station and if you have Trading or Fighting ship stored somewhere away you most likely will buy a hauler, travel there and then switch ships and sell your taxi.
