Elite Dangerous: Sidewinder

Most pilots start their careers in the Sidewinder. It is a classic ship design that has been in use (in various configurations) since 2982. Its original design was a light support ship and it lacked jump capability. Modern compact drives have enabled jump-capable versions to be created, making this a useful all rounder. Some navies still use these ships as fighters and patrol craft.

Sidewinder is a starter ship so do not expect anything great from it - it's a ship that you have from the very beginning and will most likely try to move away from. Earning money is simple enough to be able to afford much better ship within first hours of playing the game, if you know what to do. Check video about how to earn money in sidewinder for more info.

Maximum cargo bay size is 10 tonnes (without shields) and jump range around 24LY.

Nevertheless sidewinder is very fun ship to fly, just not good for earning money, but you still can do basic missions, trading, bounty hunt and even exploration in it.

Sidewinder has only 2 small hard points so it's not recommended to attack medium and large ships or wings unless you know what you are doing. Small hard points will have 33% damage penalty against medium and large ship hull making it even harder to kill those.

I would recommend to use 1 beam laser and 1 multi-cannon - beam to get rid of enemy shields and multi-cannon+beam combo to destroy enemy hull or module. If you target power plant and destroy it enemy ship will blow up. Gimbaled multi-cannon is easier to use against modules but it does around 15% less damage than fixed weapon from same class, but sidewinder is dirt cheap and very good for practicing. Still if you want to practice combat you will be much better in a viper, vulture or fer-de-lance.

Jump range also is not impressive, so it's an average exploration vessel and with weakest shields and hull in the game you might want to keep your exploration data in another ship.

But there is one thing that makes sidewinder special - it has completely open roof view so you can use it as a camera, you will just need head tracking device like TrackIr or EdTracker for that and you can capture perfect outside views. With debug camera introduced it's not so important anymore but sidewinder still is best moving camera - it's very nimble, small and agile ship and you can make great screenshots and videos with it.
